Science Club Gets Letters
For the opening kick of the Homecoming game, Science Club set off 500 blue and gold balloons with a message tagged to various ones.

The message said that the balloons were launched at the Maine West Homecoming game and to please report your finding to the Maine West Science Club.

Since then, the club has received many responses from people in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

One response in particular was from a Mr. and Mrs. J. Arnold Burkhart, a retired couple who reside in Belmont, Ohio.
The Burkharts sent the club a letter with a newspaper clipping from their local newspaper, The Barnesville Enterprise.

The clipping entitled, "Balloons Travel Nearly 500 Miles, Light near Belmont," told of how the helium filled blimps covered nearly 500 miles in about 36 hours, an average of about 14 miles per hour.

Mr. Burkhart said he found the 21 balloons on a high hill west of their farm house, on Sunday, Oct. 5. He and his wife took them to the paper on Oct. 6, and the article appeared the following Thursday.
