VOL. XVII, NO. 4
Dear Editor:
This letter concerns the recent Viewpoint column by Sue Szilagyi. It seems ridiculous to me that a newspaper which gets it's (sic) material from the journalism classes should institute a policy of playing up the wins and playing down the losses in their sports section.
What is journalism all about? A bigger newspaper, such as the Chicago Tribune, would never consider putting a victory by the Chicago Sting ahead of a loss for the Bears. Our Homecoming game against Maine East on Oct. 3 had all the factors for a great story (the huge crowd, our Warriors' fine performance, and a great football atmosphere), but what kind of coverage did you give it? A dinky little piece of junk in the middle of the page. Are we running a school publicity department or a newspaper?
How can the students learn the basics of frank, truthful news work with no‑holds‑barred reporting when the people in charge set such a bad example?
Being a graduate of the journalism class and a reporter for a local paper, I find this policy to be completely disgraceful and an affront to the basic ideas and principals (sic) of journalism.
Don't start argueing (sic) about school spirit either, the coaches and athletes think that your new policy stinks too.
You have no way to turn, just go back to your old sports format before your sports section becomes a complete joke. The only term which comes to mind is bush league.
