WMTH, 88.5 f.m., is an educational, non‑commercial broadcast radio station that is owned and operated by Maine Township High School District 207. It provides complete coverage of high school activities, concerts, art festivals, and sports events, as well as, coverage of community activities, holiday specials, and up‑to‑the‑minute returns of state and national campaigns. WMTH has long been recognized as a leading high school radio station in Illinois.
The WMTH staff consists of over 200 high school students. Any student is eligible to be on the WMTH staff. There are no requirements, but students who have taken broadcasting courses do find radio broadcasting easier than students who have been introduced to broadcasting before. Auditions are held for students who want to be on WMTH according to a previous announcement.
WMTH is an extra‑curricular activity, so no credit is given, but for many students WMTH has proven to be rewarding in other ways.
Larry Northon, a 1973 graduate of Maine West, worked four years in the news department of WMTH. During his senior year, he was news director. Larry is now working at WTZE in Tazewell, Virginia.
Brian Plant '76, has been on the WMTH staff since he was a sophomore. This year he is head of announcers. Brian has now secured a position at WVVX in Highland Park‑Deerfield. He does engineering work, as well as, some commercials, air announcements, and station breaks. Many students have gained valuable experience by working on WMTH. Although the WMTH staff are just beginners in the broadcasting field, they push for professional‑like broadcasting.
Mr. Daryl Schultz, sponsor of WMTH, commented, "After seven years of work, we're beginning to get a better picture of how well WMTH does in preparation for careers in radio. So far, the picture looks very bright and exciting. What started out to be a few token shows weekly, the station's responsibility has grown to daily programming. WMTH continues to grow as one of Maine West's most popular co‑curricular activities."
