Committee Salutes Age of 200
The Maine West Bicentennial Committee, chaired by Mr. Eric Edstrom, Social Science Department chairman, is dedicating a program to encourage better understanding of the American Revolution, and the importance of youth in the independence of this nation.

Presently. Mr. Willis Lindeman and the social science staff have an audio‑visual slide‑tape presentation in the library resource center display case. The display portrays many important events in American history.

Mr. Ronald Mills, Speech and Drama Department chairman, is scheduling Bicentennial youth debates on topics dealing with the youth of America. Mr. Mills is a coach of the MW Debate Team.

Mark Shekerjian '76 and Dan Nelson '78, along with Mr. Eldon Burk, assistant principal, will conduct a student tour of the Immigration and Naturalization Department offices downtown and present citizenship memorabilia to new citizens after watching them take their oath of loyalty to the United States.
The Festival of Art, "Saltue to the Bicentennial," is underway already. Mr. George Blanas, Art Department chairman, is sponsoring art contests open to all MW students to encourage participation in the festivities. Along with the Art Festival a Festival of American Poetry and Extemporaneous Reading, sponsored by Mr. Edstrom, is being held.

In April, Mary Bergdolt '76 in coordination with Ms. Karen Kenyon, girls' P.E. chairperson, is staging a reenactment of Paul Revere's famous ride of April 19, 1775. Participants will travel a bike hike that could seek to raise funds for a community project.

Mr. Robert Kuite, Music Department chairman, is forming a drum and fife corps to represent the colonial period. This authentic corps group would play music suitable for the revolutionary period.

Mr. Kuite is also planning a music pageant this year, and Mr. Blanas will supervise construction of a collage mural in R‑209.
