Speech Team Prepares For Meet
at York HS
Maine West's speech team members are working hard as they approach their first meet of the season against Glenbrook North. The meet will be held at York High School in Bensenville.
This meet, which will be on Nov. 22, will include all the individual events catagories. Contestants in these categories from Maine West have not yet been selected.
Categories of competition in acting are humorous and dramatic duet, humorous and dramatic interpretation, and original comedy. These involve presenting, in either duet or solo form, material taken from plays, stories, or other literary works, or, in the case of original comedy, material written by the contestant himself.
In public speaking, the events consist of original oration, in which each participant chooses a topic, writes an essay on it and presents it to an audience; and extemporaneous speaking, in which the contestant is given one hour to write a speech before its presentation.
Other events include oratorical declamation, radio speaking, verse reading, and prose reading.
"I think that speech competition in the IHSA is one of the best activities connected with the school for students to gain confidence and maturity," declared Mr. Ronald Mills, team coach. "With the speech team, we represent the creativity and the mental development of students in imaginative and sensitive thinking."
