VOL. XVII, NO. 4
The Warrior cross country season came to a climactic end last Saturday with a sixth place finish at the state meet. This followed a first place finish at the sectionals last week.
The strong Warrior performance at the state meet began last Saturday at the Lake Forest Sectional Meet which found all seven Warrior distancemen earning a trip downstate by finishing first as a team, edging out both Deerfield and Maine East.
Individually at the sectionals, Brian Tolan was the first runner from West to cross the finish line. He was followed by teammates Jeff Brydges. Terry Walters, Bob Pawelko, Gary Paul, Don Murray, and Morris Danielson in that order.
Going into the state meet, Coach Bill Barringer had nothing but praise for his runners. "No Maine West cross country team has accomplished so much this early. West teams have finished sixth and seventh in the state. I cannot imagine this team not finishing in the first 10 teams, although they would not have to be ashamed of finishing much lower. They could finish toward the top of the first 10."
Jeff Brydges paced all West runners, finishing twenty‑third out of 235 runners in three‑mile marathon in Peoria's Detweiler Park. Following Brydges were Tolan, Murray, Walters. Paul, and Pawelko respectively. Morris Danielson, the other Warrior qualifier, did not figure in the scoring due to an injury to his ankle.
