Soccer Team Plays In Sectional Meet
"We were just too tired after the triple overtime on Friday's game," commented Coach Chuck Powers as his Warriors were defeated in the New Trier West Sectional by New Trier West 2 to 0.
The Nov. 1 game began well played and very aggressive. The Warriors controlled the first quarter. Matt Serna, Scott Gibbert, John Bachmeirer, and Doug Unzicker kept the ball in New Trier territory while holding back any attack mounted by the Cowboys.
Then the second quarter began, and the Warriors hopes for state honors were washed out as fatigue and frustration beat them, not being outplayed. The Warrior's super aggressive style of play hurt them as the harder they tried the more tired they became. They then began to foul heavily and lose confidence in themselves. Yellow warning cards were passed out to Gibbert and Wally Wrona for being extra aggressive. After that the only other thing the Warriors received was a loss of the game.
Early last week the Warriors defeated the Titans of Glenbrook South 4 to 0. Goals were scored by Felix Garoz, Glen Watson, Wally Wrona, and Dean Carpenter. Garoz scored on a shot from Watson that eluded the Titan goalie and was helped in by Garoz. Watson later scored on a blast from 40 yards out which was a deflected shot from Greg Koellar's breakaway. Wrona cracked his shot from 16 yards out, and Carpenter finished the scoring with a super penalty shot.
Then on Oct. 31 a most exciting game was played against Glenbrook North. The game was even until the third overtime when Watson crossed to Carpenter who then crossed to Koellar. Greg headed it in the net, then cracked his head on the goal post, and was knocked unconscious.
This win put the Warriors into the final game against New Trier West.
