West Stops Trojans
The Maine West Warrior football team ended one of the toughest seasons ever with an overall record of four wins and five losses and a conference record of three wins and four losses. Six out of the nine teams that the Warriors played this year were ranked at one time in the state or Chicago area. The first five games the Warriors played were the toughest and were all against ranked clubs. Head Coach James Morel and his squad started out slow against the tough clubs, but finished strong, winning three of their last four games.

The Warriors almost did everything right on Friday. Oct. 24, as the rains came down on the Maine West gridiron. The Warriors outplayed, outclassed, and most of all, outscored the Trojans of Niles East in the Warriors' final home game by a score of 27-0. The Trojans' Head Coach Gerald Ferguson said the Warriors' one advantage over them would be that this was the first and only night game the Trojans were to play this year, but in that game it seemed the Warriors had a few more advantages than that one. Scot Unger scored two touchdowns from 2 and 36 yards out.
Rob Earhart scored on a 15-yard pass, and Bob Zuccarini scored on a 4-yard run. Coach Morel placed his second string players in the game as he was easily assured of a victory that night.

The Warriors traveled to play an always tough Niles West in their last game of the year and successfully defeated the Indians by a score of 6‑3.

Niles West opened the scoring as they were closing in on the Warrior goal line. The defense held off a potential touchdown threat, and the Indians were forced to go for the field goal and converted it. A Niles West fumble in the third quarter resulted in the only Warrior touchdown which proved to be the winner. Rob Earhart picked up the loose ball and ran 90 yards for the Maine West score.

Coach Morel credited the defense with a good job in their final outing. He also was very pleased this year with Scot Unger who averaged around 6 yards per carry and gained over 1,300 yards this year in total offense.
