VOL. XVII, NO. 5
Concert Orchestra Begins Season
"I think that the performance prospects for this year are excellent. This is the best string section that we've had since I came to Maine West," stated orchestra director Mr. Francis Vaupel about this year's Concert Orchestra.
Mr. Vaupel went on to say, 'At this point we are not realizing our potential because of the lack of playing experience and the lack of practice. I feel that time will overcome both of these problems."
The orchestra opened its concert season with a string performance last Thursday night at 8. Featured on the program was the "Concerto for Four Pianos," by Johann Sebastian Bach, with Tom Zyrkowski '76, Yvonne Pytlik '79, Carl Stone '77 and Kathy Bogner '77 playing first, second, third, and fourth pianos respectively.
Other selections were "Chorale from the Sinfonia Concertante," by Clifton Williams; "Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance," first movement, by Percy E. Fletcher; "Weihnachtsmusik," by Henry Purcell; "Pizzicato Polka,' by Johann and Josef Strauss, "St. Paul Suite," first movement, by Gustav Holst, ''Melody,'' by Johannes Brahms; and "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," by W. A. Mozart.
The "Eine Kleine Nachtsmusik" will be conducted by Miss Mary Shirley, this year's Music Department student teacher. Miss Shirley will soon graduate from the University of Illinois after several years of playing with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. She has also worked in St. Louis as a composer, arranger, and a musician for the CMC recording studios,
Mr. Vaupel has been directing the Concert, Intermediate, and Beginning Orchestras for five years. He attended Beloit College and Northwestern University and has a master's degree from Northern Illinois University. In addition to his work here at Maine West, Mr. Vaupel has studied with several Chicago Symphony members, plays professionally with various orchestras in the area.
