This week the Westerner honors two fine athletes, the soccer team's Matt Serna and the cross country team's Brian Tolan. Serna, who played the fullback position for the team, received unanimous votes from coaches during many meets for a candidate as an all‑state player. According to Coach Charles Powers, the biggest stronghold of the team was its fine defensive playing. This defense was only made stronger with Serna as one of the main defensive players. The soccer team will surely lose a very valuable player next year with the absence of Serna.
Tolan, on the other hand, will still be around to lead the team to many victories next season. This year Tolan led the Warrior runners in all meets except two. Tolan placed an impressive second at the District meet and thirty‑fourth out of 365 runners at the state meet. Not only is Tolan an excellent runner but also an accelerated student, according to Coach William Barringer.
Coach Barringer commented, "I'm sure he'll be a leader, both in races and providing leadership to the team next year." Also the coach mentioned that next year's season should be even more outstanding than this year with runners such as Tolan and Jeff Brydges.
