Basketball Season To Start Tonight
With high hopes for a successful season, Coach Gaston Freeman brings his Warriors into the initial contest of the Thanksgiving tournament. The bucketmen will tangle with the always tough Maine South squad starting at 8 tonight.
Coach Freeman has 27 years of experience under his belt and a goal of 500 wins easily within reach after a season of 14 and 9 last year. He looks forward to this year as one that he terms 'very optimistic."
Coach Freeman's optimism is shared by the entire team - a team which has showed a lot of quickness in its pre-season workouts. The varsity mentor believes this speed will enable the cagers to implement a variety of new patterns on both offense and defense. He is especially anxious to test out his man-to-man defense against their initial opponents.
Though some may question the lack of size and the noticeably small number of returning lettermen, Coach Freeman maintains that this year's team is not only quicker but also taller than the squad of 1975. Bob Zuccarini is the only returning letterman, but Coach Freeman contends that the word "letterman" can be misleading and that the majority of the boys on the squad have an abundance of either varsity or junior varsity experience.
Returning from last year's varsity team will be Bob Zuccarini, Dave Kennedy, and Bill Finnis. Buddy Doroskin, Bill Kuempel, and Scott Gibbert will return from last year's J/V team, and Jim Lofgren will be making a comeback bid after being hampered by injury last season. Pete Karrabas, Bob Anderson, Ken Kunze, Kevin Gerhardt, and Mike Wright will be returning from last year's sophomore team.
Despite the optimistic outlook, the Warriors will have to prove themselves right from the start. Out of their next four games, the cagers will have to face three teams who rank in the top 20. After tonight's game the Warriors will face Niles West and New Trier East, both considered tough and highly rated.
