A Spectator Sport That Draws Interest
By SUE SZILAGYI

The winter sports season is beginning and once again Maine West teams will be competing with the various schools within the district. One sport that is interesting and is an excellent spectator sport is gymnastics. In previous years both the boys' and girls' gymnastics teams have had weak school support. Gymnastics takes a combination of flexibility, endurance, agility, strength and stamina.

Also gymnastics provides a diversified scoring technique. Points are accumulated in two areas: one for difficulty and the second for the execution of the moves. The range for one competitor is between 1.0 and 10.0 score.
This year the girls' team will be facing a higher caliber competition which should provide some interesting meets. Also boys' gymnastics will be competing with a fresh new team except for returning gymnast Patrick Dent (whose scores ranged last year between 6.5 and 8.5).

With the popularity of Olga Korbet and growing interest in gymnastics as recreation and exercise, Maine West students will find that both the girls' and boys' gymnastics teams can provide an interesting and exciting meet as they compete this year.
