VOL. XVII, NO. 5
Maine West swimming is under new management. This year's varsity/soph coach is Mr. Scott Chovanec who, along with freshman Coach Jim Borowski and diving Coach John Carle, will be working toward a winning season.
Mr. Chovanec attended the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse for four and a half years during which time he majored in physical education and health and also served as captain on the swimming team.
Mr. Chovanec's past experience includes eight years of coaching at all levels. He coached at the varsity level while teaching at high school in Bloomington, Minnesota, and last year was head coach of an A.A.U. team which included novices as well as national qualifiers.
Coach Chovanec's philosophy toward swimming is that swimmers should have fun in what they're doing. He believes that swimmers should be motivated to such a point that they will continue swimming after high school and possibly pursue careers in coaching. Motivation in the workouts is one of his goals.
Team managers this year are Monica Becker and Mark Erickson, who sustained an injury earlier this year and appears to be out for the season.
Based on what he has already seen, Coach Chovanec has described this year's swim team as "a group of hard working ‑enthusiastic and highly motivated young people who have set high goals for both the team and themselves."
The first swim meet this year will be held today at 3:30 against Proviso West at home.
