Science Club Terrariums
As a fund‑raising project the members of the Maine West Science Club have been in the process of constructing terrariums, which are being sold this week. Recently they had collected clear glass bottles of various shapes and sizes from the Des Plaines recycling center and are using these bottles in the construction of the terrariums. The sand and gravel were obtained from Meyer Materials and the potting soil and terrarium plants were donated by Lake‑Farm Florists. Additional plants were obtained free of charge from Ray's, Pesche's, and O'Brien Florists.
The terrariums come in various sizes ranging from $3.50 to $5 already wrapped as a Christmas present. The terrariums have been on sale since Dec. 8 and can still be purchased after school in B‑103.
Christmas Concert
This year's Christmas Concert was held Dec. 11 in the auditorium. This year the concert involved every student in the vocal department, every chorus, choir, and ensemble as well as the Jazz Band.
The Jazz Band played a medley of Christmas songs arranged by Stan Kenton. They also played some current arrangements in the Jazz‑Rock style.
The vocal selections included "pop" music, sacred songs, music from Handel's "Messiah," French carols, and even a carol by William Billings, the first American composer.
The finale of the concert combined all of the choruses into one large choir, singing a medley of familiar carols from Suite One of the "Many Moods of Christmas" by Robert Shaw and Robert Bennet, with Mr. Jack Olander at the organ.
Caroling
This afternoon from 2-2:30, the Concert Choir will be singing Christmas carols throughout the halls of Maine West.
