Chairman Presents Talk
Maine West's English Department chairman, Mr. Daniel Silkowski, represented the College Entrance Examination Board at an advanced placement conference in Topeka, Kansas, on Nov. 24. The purpose of the talk was to promote the advanced placement program among Kansas administrators and teachers.

"AP is a program wherein selected students participate in specialized programs of instruction ultimately leading to the nationally administered AP examination in May," Mr. Silkowski explained. "Based on the results of the examination, a candidate may earn either credit and/or placement from participating colleges."
Using Maine West as an example, he demonstrated the success of the AP program among high school students.

Mr. Silkowski, who served as a consultant for the College Examination Board for three years, has visited several school districts in his efforts to further the use of the advanced placement program, including districts in Nebraska, Illinois, and Kansas. He has also graded AP examinations for five years and has taught AP English for seven of the almost 20 years that the program has been used in Maine Township.
