VOL. XVII, NO. 6
Every year a book called Who's Who in American High School Students is published. In it students who are considered outstanding get the honor of having their name and what they did in high school listed.
A student must have participated in school and community activities. Grade point average is not the only qualification. If a student has an A average but participates in very few or no clubs at all, he probably will not be chosen. However, if a student carries a B or C average and is active in clubs, athletics, cheerleading, Student Council, Brotherhood, etc. he may be elected to Who's Who.
The students are recommended by their counselors, club sponsors, and Mr. Eldon Burk, assistant principal, in the middle of December. They are given forms to fill out and return to Who's Who. It is the student's choice whether he wants to return the forms or not.
The honor is for juniors and seniors and offers ten $500-$1,000 scholarships. Even if a scholarship is not won, it is a good recommendation for college or a job.
Last year's seniors from Maine West now listed in Who's Who are Cathy Dueball, Betty Lou Evans, Glen Heiden, Larry Keller, Carol Kent, Doug Merkel, Sandy Sadler, Jim Tortorelli, and Diane Williams. This year's seniors listed in Who's Who are Sue Bowersox, Dave Gafrick, and Scott Peckenpaugh.
