Girl Fencers Take First at Tri‑Meet
This year's season may be the last one for the girls' fencing squad due to lack of competition among other high schools in the area. Currently, the only teams on their schedule are Maine South and Arlington, with Arlington planning to drop the sport after this year.
Miss Karen Kenyon, fencing coach, commented, "It is unfortunate that more schools are not interested in fencing. However, there are so many interested girls at Maine West that we will probably have a fencing club next year and wait until the competition increases."
The duelers have done well so far this season, with a 2-0 JV record over Arlington and a 1-2 varsity record with Arlington and Maine South. High scorers for the varsity are Barb Breider and Terhilda Garrido on A-strip and Carol Krueger and Janet Neetz on B-strip. Placing individually for Maine West in the varsity tri-meet against Arlington and Maine South were Terhilda Garrido, second place with a 4-1 strip score, and Barb Breider, third place with a 3-2 strip score. Maine West took over-all first place at the meet.
