Warriors Win Five Straight
After being knocked down in the Thanksgiving tournament, the Maine West Warriors came up swinging, winning their next five games. The bucketmen toppled the so‑called powerhouse, Maine South, and then treated Coach Gaston Freeman to his five hundredth high school victory.
The slow start, which included some of the best teams in the area, began with the Warriors losing the season opener 63-55. In their initial encounter with pre-season ranked Maine South, the cagers came up on the short end again, losing 73-65. New Trier handed West its third straight loss. The score in that game was 57-48.
The Prospect Knights proved to be no match as the Warriors chalked up their first victory, 53‑47.
On Dec. 5 the dreaded Maine South Hawks traveled to the Herman Rider Gym to take on the Warriors in their first conference battle. Coach Freeman received balanced scoring from Bill Fininis, who scored 16, Bob Zuccarini, who hit for 15, and Buddy Doroskin, who came up with 13, upsetting the Hawks 56-50. Dave Kennedy ran the offense flawlessly, the squad committing only nine turnovers in the contest. Apparent in the victory was the team effort involved. Doroskin grabbed five rebounds; Zuccarini had eight; and Pete Karabas pulled down eight as the Warriors achieved a task considered by some as being insurmountable.
The following night the Warriors had to battle back from a 15-point deficit to defeat Libertyville, 60-55. Karabas led West with 18 points, Zuccarini had 16, and Fininis scored 10 in a game that left the Warriors with a 2-3 record.
Niles North failed to threaten the Maine West win streak as Doroskin scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in this 64-45 victory. Karabas scored 14, and Fininis had 12 in this contest.
A milestone was reached on Dec. 13 when the Warriors collided with the Spartans of Glenbrook North. At the final horn Maine West had come away with a 52-45 victory.
The win that kept the Warrior's streak alive at five saw them hold the Spartans to just 45 points, well below their 73 points a game average.
Doroskin grabbed a career high 20 rebounds, and Zuccarrini scored 16 points in this historic effort. This game left the Warriors at 3-0, seating them in first place in their conference.
