Warrior Swimmers Down
Proviso West
Maine West swimming is off to a good start this year with a varsity record of 2 and 2 and an undefeated freshman team. Also off to a good start is this year's diving crew, contributing largely to the point totals in every meet thus far.
The varsity, JV, and freshman teams were all winners against Proviso West with the varsity Warriors winning every event in that meet.
New Trier West and Highland Park proved to be two very tough teams, both having an advantage in depth over the Warriors. Against New Trier West, first places for Maine West were Jim Ritzema in the 100-yard free style and Tom Ptach in the 200-yard individual medley. Winners against Highland Park were the medley relay team of Roel, Stenstrom, Baumhart, and Schlacter and Dunham in the diving. Although the varsity team lost both meets, the freshmen won 95-74 and 91-78 led by first year standouts: Rob MacNab, Pete Dyer, and Steve Seaholm.
Last Saturday, the varsity tankers took on the Maine South Hawks in what turned out to be a very close meet with Maine West winning the last event to make the final score 89-80. Winners for Maine West were Randy Roel in the 100-yard backstroke, Jerry Paulson in the diving, Craig MacNab in the 200-yard individual medley, the 400-yard free style relay team of Schlacter, MacNab, Ayala, and Ptach, and the 200-yard medley relay team of Roel, Stenstrom, Baumhart, and Schlacter. The junior varsity and freshman teams also won against Maine South 119-41 and 91-78, respectively.
After the meet against Maine South Varsity Coach Scott Chovanec said, "We've been working hard and swimming well, and we expect our times to start coming down; everything should fall into place Friday against Niles North." The Warriors will take on Niles North at home tonight with the freshman meet beginning at 6:15 and the varsity‑JV meet starting at 7:30.
