City Government Symposium
Initiated by Mr. Freeman
By JANET TEEVANS and THOM O'DONNELL
A City Government Symposium was held Wednesday in L-101. The program was the brainchild of Mr. Gaston Freeman of the Social Science Department. Last summer 30 students went to the Des Plaines city government to work and to learn about how significant the city government and the officials are to us.
The mayor began the program by discussing his job and his responsibilities. One of his opening comments was "The position of mayor is like being the president of a private corporation. He must see that all departments function as efficiently as possible."
Alderman Thomas Koplos discussed the functions of the Water and Sewer Committee. This committee is responsible for the maintenance of the Des Plaines sewer system, the water treatment plant, and preventing potential health hazards.
City Clerk Eleanor Rohrbach publishes the minutes of the meetings of the City Council, organizes the building codes, general codes, and city ordinances, and coordinates all local election proceedings.
Police Lieutenant Mike Clark noted that the city will see a dramatic increase in crime prevention programs and, due to the increased use of computers, reduction in response time for help. Des Plaines will soon join in the nationwide emergency telephone system. The number 911 will signal for help from either the police or the fire department.
At the meeting five Maine West seniors listened to the speakers and asked questions afterwards. Mary Jo Zalabak, Scott Peckenpaugh, Tina Voelker, Sue Melchert, and Jeanne Sahs attended this meeting.
