Pep Band Attracts Fans
As Well as Sports Teams
Maine West rah‑rahs would sound pretty lonely without some music behind them. The fans would be a little bit drearier. Football and basketball games might be sparcely attended if not for the Pep Band.
Directed by seniors Mark Shekerjian, Tom Fischer, and Mark Davis, the Pep Band invites anyone in the band program to join. Mr. Paul Magnusson, sponsor, said, "The only requirements for Pep Band membership are an instrument, a funny hat, and a lot of spirit."
Pep Band is organized and run entirely by Maine West students. Band directors conduct rehearsals before each game, and Pep Band librarians, Louise Sieben '77 and Bridget Starr '77, sort, stack, and distribute music sheets to members of the band.
The Maine West Pep Band has for all recent memory played the fight song at football games and basketball games,
but many people question whether Warrior fans attend games to see the team or to hear the band.
The bleachers surrounding the band are seldom empty, no matter who the competition is on that particular night; but other sections of the gym or stadium often are barren territory not to be tread upon.
The Maine West sports teams have always ranked respectably, but perhaps they are not what attracts the fans. Fans like to have a good time; and when the game begins to get monotonous, whether the fault is that of the Warriors or not, the fans naturally turn to the band for some excitement.
Many fans could not say who scored a touchdown or who took most rebounds, but ask someone at the game who played a solo in the Pep Band.
