MW Speech Team Places At
Speaking Tournaments
The Maine West Speech Team has this year become "one of the strongest teams in the state of Illinois," according to Mr. Ron Mills, speech team coach.

Speech events, which Mr. Mills and Ms. Mariann Sullivan coach, consist of 11 categories ranging from original comedy to dramatic acting to radio speaking. Members of the MW team have received awards in eight of these categories.

The team on the whole has earned a first place trophy, a second place trophy, and a fourth, a sixth, and a ninth place standing in five tournaments, competing against as many as 40 schools at a time.

Dave Beedy '76, Brian Plaut '76, Dave Gafrick '76, and Scott Peckenpaugh '76 have each placed in radio speaking, an accomplishment very few schools achieve. Scott Peckenpaugh has also won awards in humorous interpretation and dramatic duet acting with Janet Seitz '76.

Steve Pelinski '77 has earned four awards: two in humorous duet acting with Megan Peterson '77 and two in dramatic duet acting with Betsy Forkins '76. Mary Jo Zalabak has taken awards in both original comedy and dramatic interpretation.

Many other students have won awards this year. The total number of trophies amassed by MW this year is 22. Team members also have eight certificates of merit for high standing.
Tomorrow the Speech Team competes at Forest View High School and next Saturday at Oak Park‑River Forest. Eastern Illinois University will be the site of an overnight tournament on Feb. 6‑7.

At each tournament contestants arrive at the designated school at about 7:30 a.m., meaning they leave MW between 6 and 7 am., depending how far they must travel. Registration is held, participants are oriented to the school, and competition begins.

Students perform for a judge and an audience three times, and the judges' scores are tallied to determine winners. After the winners are determined, the awards are presented; and the students board buses for home.

On Feb. 28 Maine West will host the district tournament, which is the first step toward the state championship competition. Last year Maine West sent two contestants to the state championship tournament at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois.

Scott Peckenpaugh took sixth place in original oration, and Mary Jo Zalabak took ninth place in dramatic interpretation in the state finals.
