Basketball Teams Continue To Win
The prep basketball schedule for Maine West's varsity cagers over the holidays kept them very busy and saw them come away with a 4-3 record.
It started on Dec. 16 when the Warriors downed the Niles East Trojans, 86-45, at home. Maine West outplayed the Trojans in almost every facet of the game by being quicker, hitting their open shots, and playing the persistent type of defense that is becoming more common with the club.
The Warriors' six game unbeaten streak came to a halt when the Indians of Niles West, now ranked sixteenth in the Chicago area, out-rebounded the Warriors 2 to 1, and most importantly outscored them 69-56. That was the first and only conference defeat the Warriors have had this season.
Maine West finished with a 2-2 record in the 16-team, four-day York Christmas Tournament. The Westmen started out fine against Glenbard West with a 78-69 win. Maine was then at 1-1 in the tourney by losing to top-seeded Weber, 74-66. The cagers then came back to defeat Wheaton Central, 60-48. Then on Friday, Dec. 30, Morton West, seeded number two, eliminated the Warriors from the tournament by defeating them 63-62 in overtime.
Bob Zuccarini was named to the all‑tournament team for his outstanding play. Bill Fininis, who had games of 24 and 23 points, was surprisingly left out. Dave Kennedy also played well in the tourney.
On Friday, Jan. 9, Maine West got back into action with a conference game against Glenbrook South and defeated them 68-49. Buddy Doroskin, Fininis, and Zuccarini hit double figures in the scoring column. Kennedy had 9 points and Pete Karabas hit for 8. The varsity record now stands at 7-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The junior-varsity squad lost to Niles West back on Dec. 20 by a score of 60-51 which gave them their first loss.
The sophomores were almost as busy as the varsity squad. Coach Don Talbot and his club lost on Dec. 16 to Niles East, 46-45, and defeated Niles West three days later, 51-47. In their holiday tournament the sophomore cagers won the first two games and lost to East Leyden in the third, in overtime, 59-56.
The freshman A team was eliminated early in the Hersey Tournament winning the first game against the Huskies of Hersey, 52-40, and losing in succession to Deerfield and Barrington. The A team defeated Niles West on Dec. 19, 40-39, and the B team was defeated by the Indians, 43-41.
