Varsity Tankers Break Even
In Holiday, Conference Meets
Maine West's varsity tankers broke even over the holidays with wins over Niles North and Hersey and losses to Prospect and Glenbrook North. This brings the varsity Warriors' overall record to 4 and 4 thus far.

On Friday, Dec. 19, the Warriors downed Niles North 101 to 71 on the varsity level and 118 to 40 on the freshman level, with the JV winning on a forfeit by Niles North. Individual winners for the varsity were Jim Ritzema in the 200-yard free style, Tom Ptach in the 500-yard free style and the 200-yard individual medley, Casey Schlacter in the 50- and 100-yard free style, Jerry Paulson in diving, and the 400-yard free style relay team composed of Ptach, Ritzema, Craig MacNab, and Tony Ayala.

The next day proved to be a little tougher for Maine West with the Warriors suffering a loss to Prospect after their strong winning effort the night before. Winners for Maine West were Ritzema in the 200‑yard free style, Schlacter in the 50‑yard free style, and Ptach in the 500‑yard free style.

On the JV level, Tom Stanonis won the diving competition, and Duane Bohne took a first place in the 100‑yard breaststroke. The meet had been scheduled as a double‑dual meet; but the third team, Elk Grove, forfeited saying that the meet would put them at a psychological disadvantage in conference competition later on.

Bouncing back on Dec. 30, the Warriors clobbered Hersey, 104 to 63 on the varsity level and 85 to 75 on the JV level. First places for the varsity were Ritzema in the 200-yard individual medley, Ptach in the 100-yard butterfly, Randy Roel in the 100-yard breaststroke, Jim Stenstrom in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the 400-yard free style relay team of Ritzema, Schlacter, MacNab, and Ptach.
On the JV level it was Pete Dyer in the 200‑yard free style, Rob MacNab in the 200‑yard individual medley, Tom Stanonis in the diving, Steve Seaholm in the 100‑yard free style, Rob MacNab in the 500‑yard free style, Duane Bohne in the 100‑yard breaststroke, and the 400‑yard free style relay team of Pete Dyer, Rich Collier, Jay Dahl, and Vince Lambrechts.

Traveling on their own over the holidays were the freshmen who placed fifth out of 15 teams at the Thornridge Invitational and the sophomores who placed eighth out of 12 teams at the Maine East Invitational.

Sophomore standouts were Bohne who took fifth in the 100‑yard breaststroke, Randy Roel with a second in the 100‑yard backstroke, Ted Fillips who took fifth in the diving competition, and the first place medley relay team of Roel, Bohne, Kurt Johnson, and Dave Crement.

On Friday, Jan. 9, the Warriors took on the powerful Glenbrook North Spartans, swimming hard but coming away with varsity and JV losses and a win for the freshman.

The next swimming meet will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1:30 p.m. when the Warriors take on Arlington at home.
