Thespians Present 'U. S. A.', 'Thoreau'
Cuttings from the plays "U.S.A." and "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" were performed last night and will also be presented tonight and tomorrow night in L-101. Admission for the performances is $2. Tickets may be purchased at the bookstore or from any speech member.

The cast of "U.S.A." took the second place trophy in competition at North Chicago High School on Jan. 10. The cast competed against 13 other Reader's Theatre groups.

On Feb. 21 both Reader's Theatre and Speech Team will compete at the Maine Festival of plays at Maine North. The competition will be titled the Harold Chastain Memorial Festival in honor of the late Harold Chastam, a former drama teacher at Maine South. All Maine West students are invited to attend.

On Feb. 28 Maine West's Reader's Theatre and Speech Team will compete in the IHSA District Competition to be held here at Maine West. Ms. Mariann Sullivan is the director of "U.S.A." and Mr. Ronald Mills is the director of "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail."
Members of the cast of "U.S.A." are Bruce Weaver '77, Kathleen Sandford '78, Sandy Scheffel '76, Tammy Huffaker '77, Frances Kosac '78, and Joe Anderson '76. The assistant director is Stan Lata '76.

The cast members of "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" include: Steve Pelinski '77, Stan Lata '76, Ed Cutler '76, John Jones '77, Julie Stoneburner '78, Megan Peterson '77, and Betsy Forkins '76. The assistant director is Amy Tuttle '78.

According to Mr. Mills, "The best way to help these speech students is to come out so they get experience before an audience. The kind of school spirit the speech team can use is an audience."
