Warrior Cagers Battle for First
Pandemonium broke lose. Dave Kennedy had just fired in a 20-foot jump shot with three seconds left on the clock to down the Maine South Hawks, 53-52. The victory was the second over the Hawks this season.
That exciting moment came on Jan. 23 and was set up by Pete Karabas, who after accepting a court‑length pass from Bob Anderson, dished it off to Kennedy. The Warriors led much of the game, but six quick Hawk points put West down by one with just 11 seconds left and set the stage for the dramatic shot.
The following evening the Warriors traveled north and took care of Waukegan West by 19 points. The squad was led by 25 points from Bob Zuccarini, and Kennedy added 15 extra points.
Last Friday evening the Warriors trounced Niles North 60-33 at home. West trailed 12-10 after the first quarter, but outscored the Vikings 22-8 during the second session. Bill Fininis had 18 points for Maine, and Zuccarini led all scorers with 25 and hauled down eight rebounds. Kennedy, who along with starting center Buddy Doroskin was rested during the second half, added six assists to the Warrior effort.
The victory set the stage for Tuesday's contest with Niles West in which the Warriors will be battling for first place in the Central Suburban League South Conference. They will travel to Glenbrook North for a conference battle tonight with the sophomore game beginning at 6:30 and the varsity tipping‑off at approximately 8:15.
