VOL. XVII, NO. 8
West Spikers Finish Season
The Maine West varsity volleyball team ended their season with a record of 14 wins and 2 losses, after being defeated by Forest View in the District IHSA tournament. The team played hard during their season, and by Dec. 13, when Maine West hosted an invitational, the varsity held a record of nine wins and one loss in non‑conference games and five wins no losses in conference games. Their loss came playing New Trier East, last year's state champions.
In the Dec. 13 invitational eight schools from the conference competed. Each team played three matches, and the Maine West varsity came out undefeated in the three matches played, becoming the conference champions.
The team went on to defeat Niles North on Dec. 16, Evanston on Jan. 6, and Niles East on Jan. 8. The varsity squad played in the districts and then the sectionals on Jan. 22-23. In the sectionals the team was defeated by Forest View. This eliminated them from the super-sectionals and the state finals held on Jan. 30-31.
The junior‑varsity squad finished the season with 10 wins and 3 losses. One of their wins came on Jan. 6 when they defeated Evanston High School.
According to varsity volleyball Coach Royleen Tipton, the team. was very experienced because the team had six seniors. The most consistent spiker, according to Ms. Tipton, was Jenny Bruns; and the most consistent all around player was Karen Kiester. Other members of the varsity and junior varsity teams were Ann Arnold, Sue Bowersox, Robin Downing, Evelyn Johnson, Barb Klein, Jane Krauser, Lee Ann Larocca, Sue Links, Carolyn Miller, Arlene Mundt, Nancy Parrotte, Irene Polacek, Jane Stube, Mickey Wainscott, Nancy Weber, and Irene Weingartner.
The team lost against Forest View, Ms. Tipton thinks, because they had an off night, as other teams may sometimes have.
