West Tankers Prepare For
Central League Meet
Maine West's varsity tankers met Niles East Wednesday in hopes of bringing their regular season to an end with a win. With the end of the regular season schedule the Warriors have already begun to reduce yardage and increase quality during workouts in preparation for the upcoming championship season.
During the last three weeks the Warriors have lost some very close meets but have improved steadily, experiencing a consistent drop in times.
On Friday, Jan. 16, against Niles West, Maine West won on all three levels with the varsity winning on a forfeit while the JV won 87 to 73 and the freshmen won 122 to 43, both showing fine team efforts.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, plagued by injury and illness, the Warriors lost 88 to 84 in a very close contest with Arlington which would more than likely have gone the other way had Maine West been at full strength. First place finishers for Maine West were Casey Schlacter in the 50 and 100‑yard free style; Randy Roel in the 100‑yard backstroke; and the 400‑yard free style relay team of Tom Ptach, Jim Ritzema, Craig MacNab, and Casey Schlacter. Also losing was the JV team with Steve Seaholm and Kurt Johnson taking the only first places for Maine West.
Glenbrook South proved to be a formidable adversary downing the Warriors on both varsity and JV levels but losing 94 to 81 on the freshman level.
First places for Maine West were turned in by Tom Ptach in the 200-yard individual medley. Jerry Paulson in the diving, Randy Roel in the 100-yard backstroke, Duane Bohne in the 100-yard breaststroke, Steve Seaholm in the 100 and 150 yard free style, Rob MacNab in the 100-yard individual medley, Tom Stanonis in the diving, Randy Deck in the 50-yard backstroke, and Dan Dugo in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Last Friday was Parents' Night at Maine West with the Warriors hosting Maine East in one of the most dramatic contests of the season. The team honored this year's graduating seniors: Tony Ayala, Scott Burgo, Mark Erickson, C. H. Falstad, Brian Plaut, Jerry Paulson, Jim Ritzema, Casey Schlacter, Bob Simon, and Jim Stenstrom. The Warriors were downed in the end but showed one of their finest team efforts of the season. Outstanding performances were turned in by C. H. Falstad, Randy Roel, Jim Ritzema, Jim Acker, and Frank Whitson who all had personal best times in their events. Performing well for the JV were Jay Dahl, Dave Crement, and Ted Phillips. The freshmen won 120 to 47 taking first place in almost every event and remaining undefeated.
After the meet varsity Coach Scott Chovanec said, "It was a very close meet; they edged us out in several events." The Warriors take on Niles East away tonight and will then prepare for the Central Suburban League South Division competition to be held on Feb. 13 and 14 at Glenbrook South.
