Institute Day Nears
Institute Day
A half‑day Institute Day will be observed on Thursday, Mar. 18. School will not be in session during the afternoon. Lunch will not be served. Classes will resume on Friday, Mar. 19.
M‑Club Wins
This year's Faculty‑M‑Club basketball game was held on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The M‑Club was victorious with a final score of 65‑61.
Reading Program Successful
A new reading Title I program called ACTION had successful results this past semester. The program showed an average gain of five to seven months for each student in the areas of reading skills, comprehension, and vocabulary. A variety of material, reading programs, and machines including the controlled reader are being used to assist the 35-50 freshman students who are involved in the daily classes here at Maine West.
Ms. Kenyon Officiates State Meet
Ms. Karen Kenyon, chairman of the Girls' Physical Education Department, was selected to officiate the matches in the second annual Illinois High School Association Girls' State Volleyball Tournament. The tournament was recently held at Horton Fieldhouse on the campus of Illinois State University at Normal.
Ms. Kenyon has been registered with the IHSA for six years. She is also registered in swimming and softball. Before she officiated at the state tournament, she had to officiate at various district and sectional tournaments. Along with Ms. Kenyon, seven other women were selected. Each one chosen as a floor official has achieved the highest ratings an official in the IHSA Girls' Athletic Officials Department can obtain. All eight chosen have officiated high school volleyball for five years.
Boy Scouts' Lecture
On Friday, Mar. 19, the Algonquin Division of the Boy Scouts will present a lecture on first aid. The lecture will be held in the Herman Rider Memorial Gymnasium from 6-10 p.m.
AP Tests
Advance Placement Tests will be given from May 17 through May 21. The fee for taking the test is $29. Further information and an AP pamphlet can be obtained from Mr. Daniel Silkowski, chairman of the English Department.
C.L.E.P.
Students interested in taking the College Level Examination Program should talk to Mr. James Killam in the Career Resource Center. Tests are given in many areas of study and cost $10 for each test.
'Most Likely To Get Away'
For her second time Kerry Jo Brown '77, accompanied Ms. Karen Kenyon, Girls' Physical Education Department chairman, to Concordia College in River Forest to demonstrate the art of self‑defense. She demonstrated with Ms. Kenyon's assistance the defense grips, releases, throws, and falls. This year is Kerry's third year in self-defense intramurals, and she was voted "most likely to get away" by her teachers and fellow students.
