Warrior Runners Win
Conference Championship
The Warriors are the conference champions of indoor track. West earned victories on both the varsity and sophomore levels at the conference meet held at Maine East on Feb. 28.

The 147-95 point spread over second place Maine East on the varsity level left no doubt of the power of the Warrior squad. Senior Mike Klebe led West with a pair of victories. Added to his 6' 2" winning effort in the high jump, Kiebe set a conference record in the triple jump with an effort of 42' 6 1/2". West's Steve Myers finished second in both of those events.

Another conference record was set by West's two‑mile relay team of Don Murray, Gregg Koeller, Mark Caras, and Jeff Brydges. They raced to a halflap victory over runner‑up Maine East with a time of 8:17.3. Koeller's half‑mile split of 2:01.7 was the fastest of the four West runners.
Warrior junior Brian Tolan captured one of the most exciting championships of the afternoon as he raced to a victory in the two‑mile run. He wasn't favored to win, but showed a surprising kick and finished in 9:31. Glen Watson was also victorious for West. His 21' 2" effort in the long jump was well ahead of second place.

On the sophomore level, West edged out Maine East for the championship, with the Warriors' biggest event being the 50‑yard dash. West freshman Simon Shum sprinted to a victory, just outleaning Bob Aslan, also of Maine West, who finished second.

The varsity's victory was their fourth straight indoor championship. For the sophomores it was three in a row. Now the varsity will attempt to make it four consecutive outdoor titles, with that season just around the corner.
