Fininis, Karabas Show
Outstanding Talents
Bill Fininis and Pete Karabas share this week's Warrior of the Week honors. Fininis has played consistent basketball all season and leads the team with a 56 per cent shooting average. Pete Karabas has come on strong in the last few games, performing well under the basket, and scoring valuable points in clutch situations. Karabas is averaging close to eight points a game, while Fininis is averaging over 13 points a game.
After Maine East squeaked by with a narrow 56-55 win at Maine East earlier in the season, both teams eagerly anticipated the upcoming rematch. Well worth the wait, the second time around proved to be everything it was cracked up to be. Leading the entire game, Maine West saw their lead dissolve to nothing and were behind by three points with a minute to go. Maine West took control and scored, narrowing the gap to one.
After East failed to convert, West brought the ball down, and Bill Fininis drove the lane only to be fouled. This gave him the bonus situation. Maine East called time out, adding considerable pressure on the West forward. Fininis stepped to the line and calmly put it in, giving West the tie.
East called another time out and after the 60 seconds passed, Fininis again stepped to the line and as the crowds' roar silenced, Bill Fininis converted the second shot giving the Warriors the lead with seven seconds left. East could not score as time ran out.
Fininis was 6-7 from the field, and Karabas was 5-8 scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 valuable rebounds. Fininis led the West side with 15 points. Both Fininis and Karabas were very responsible for a Warrior victory that will not soon be forgotten, and are this week's Warriors.
