Wrestlers Finish Season
Seven Maine West wrestlers had visions of going down to the state finals but were denied by strong competition in the sectionals held at West Leyden High School Feb. 20 and 21.

The seven were Tom Krauser (98), Rob Krusinski (105), Rick Gauger (112), Mike Tramel (119), Dan Barringer (155), Dave Cavazos (185), and Bob Smith (heavyweight).

They all got to the sectionals by strong performances in the districts held at Ridgewood High School Feb. 13 and 14. Krusinski and Barringer both placed first at the districts by winning three straight matches. Krauser, Gauger, Tramel, Cavazos, and Smith all finished second in their respective weight classes.

Other strong performances were turned in by Louie DePasquale (132) and Dan Cavazos (145). Both finished third.

In the team competition the Warrior grapplers finished first by 44 points. Maine South finished second and Maine East finished third.

In the sectionals it was a different story as the best any Warrior could do was three third place finishes from Krauser, Barringer, and Cavazos. Krusinski, Gauger, Tramel, and Smith all were eliminated early in the competition.
To capture third, Krauser had two wins and two losses, Barringer had a loss and two wins, as did Cavazos who lost his final match by one point.

East Leyden won the team competition as Maine West finished ninth. The varsity finished the season with a 13-7 record.

On the JV level in the districts Dennis O'Toole was the lone bright spot by placing fourth in the 105‑pound weight class.

Not all was dismal, however, because the sophomores placed third out of 15 teams. Humberto Suarez finished second while Ron Daul, Ralph Jacobson, and Rich Kilroy all finished in third place. The sophomores finished the season with a 10-4 record.

The freshman grapplers finished tenth out of 15 teams in the districts. John Proxmarer and Tom Turi finished second in their weight classes. The freshmen finished the season 6‑9.
