Seven Depts. To Present
'Avenues of the Arts'

This year a combination of seven departments will present "Avenues of the Arts" throughout the building on Friday, May 6, from 7 to 10 p.m. Instead of the traditional Art Fair in the spectator gym, a new format will be introduced. Admission will be free.

The Music Department's participation is in contest form. Eight different rooms will be designated as performance centers. Every music student will enter competition in solos or small groups.

Professional musicians have been invited to judge nearly 300 students in 150 events. They are to select the best performance from each room; then three judges will chose the best performance out of those eight. This final solo or group will perform at a department‑wide Music Festival on May 13.

Art students' best work will be in display cases in E‑wing rooms and in the hall. Photography students will have a silk‑screen demonstration, and three professional artists will exhibit their works in the cafeteria. Rooms will be set up with special lighting and music to express a more intimate mood than the Art Fairs of years past.

The Home Economics Department has a fashion show planned in L‑101. Foods students are doing a deep‑dish pizza microwave demonstration, and serving peanut brittle for the evening. The English Department will hold poetry readings in R‑209. Drama offers cuttings from plays in L‑101.

The Industrial Education Department will display woods, metals, graphics, mechanical drawings, etc. in the Rider Gym. The Physical Education Department is presenting three events. Orchesis Club will do four numbers in L‑101. Aquiana will do four numbers in the pool. In the Rider Gym the Girls' Gymnastics Club and the Boys' gymnastics team will be displaying varied activities.

The avenues or wings will be color coded, and large signs with directions will be posted. A color coded schedule will be given to each person who attends. The U and U Society will also assist.

Mr. George Blanas, head of the Art Department, states, "We are more selective in the art this year so there will be less up. I chose to be chairman of "Avenues of the Arts'' because I wanted to combine departments to show the multitude we have to offer here at Maine West."
