West Baseball Team To Play Maine South

The Maine West varsity baseball team began their regular season last week after defeating Deerfield by losing to Maine South and winning over Glenbrook North and Niles North.

On Apr. 18 it was all Maine West as the Warriors bombarded Glenbrook North with 13 hits and Rob Earhardt pitched a one hit shut‑out as the Warriors defeated North 11‑0 in just five innings.

In the first inning Tim Platek opened the Warriors' scoring by sending a solo shot over the left field fence to give West a 1‑0 lead.

The second inning saw Maine West continue its attack when Wayne Wishnew led off with a walk and was followed by Carl Henk's smash which the centerfielder missed and both scored on the four base error.

Four singles and a stolen base in the third inning gave the Warriors a 6‑0 lead. Singles by Dean Carpenter, Bob Anderson, Rob Earhardt, and Bill Garesche, followed by Anderson's stealing home, produced the Warriors' runs.

In the fourth inning West increased their lead by four when Carpenter led off with a single, and Anderson followed with one of his own. Earhardt then

traveled to second base on an error scoring Carpenter and Anderson. Next, Frosty Wantroba doubled scoring Earhardt, and Wantroba was brought home on a single by Wishnew. Maine West scored one run in the fifth inning by Tim Platek to complete the victory.

Although the offense was potent, the defense was just as sharp as they committed no errors.

On Friday, Apr. 15, the Warriors slipped by Niles North 3‑2 with all the scoring coming in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the fifth inning Bob Anderson led off with a single and scored when Wayne Wishnew followed with a double. Wishnew eventually stole home to give Maine West a 2‑0 lead.

Niles North tied the Warriors in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom half West scored to ice the game. Zuccarini led off with a single and proceeded to steal second and third before being brought home by Dean Carpenter. Steve Van Fleck picked up the win after relieving Greg Herdzina.

On Apr. 13 the Warriors were nipped by the Maine South Hawks, 2‑1, in extra innings. Maine South scored first in the first inning and led until the fifth inning when Platek scored to tie the game. The score remained tied until the eighth inning when Maine South put the game away.
