The Warrior varsity tennis team captured second place last Saturday in the Maine West Invitational with Libertyville taking the first place honors. Eight other teams competed in the meet.
York, Glenbrook North, Fenton, Lake Forest, Elmwood Park, Niles North, and Libertyville were all present for the competition. The meet ended with the Warriors in a tie for second place with Glenbrook North. However, because of the doubles championship won by the team of Bob Wyatt and Dick Gearhardt, second was awarded to Maine West. Singles player Jeff English advanced to the third round but was defeated by the eventual winner from Libertyville.
On Apr. 23 the team traveled to Maine South and defeated the Hawks, 4‑1. Winners for the Warriors were Jeff English, 5‑7, 7‑5, 6‑3; Tom Gebhardt, 6‑1, 6‑0; John Minardi and Dick Gearhardt, 6‑2, 6‑7, 6‑3; and Ken Quinn and Jeff Cook, 6‑4, 7‑5.

The varsity defeated the Elk Grove Grenadiers at an away meet on Apr. 13. The Warriors swept all matches, winning the meet with a 5‑0 score.
First singles player Jeff English defeated his opponent handily, winning 6‑4, 6‑1. Bob Wyatt did equally well, scoring 6‑3, 6‑3. Tom Gebhardt lost the first set 2‑6 but went on to defeat his opponent by winning the next sets, 7‑5 and 6‑4.
The doubles teams also did well against Elk Grove. John Minardi and Mike Maday conquered the Grenadiers, 6‑1, 6‑4. Ken Quinn and Jeff Cook also took their match by a score of 6‑2, 6‑2.
On Apr. 13 the Warriors faced Hersey and came out on top. Again the varsity team swept all events, winning 5‑0. Bob Wyatt defeated his opponent easily by a score of 6‑1, 6‑1. Tom Gebhardt also won, 6‑1, 6‑1. Jeff English fought for the first set, 7‑6, but breezed through the second 6‑2.
