Girl Swimmers Win Final

The Maine West girls' swim team was victorious in their last meet of the season. This improved their record to three wins and four defeats.

The girls' defeated Niles West 111-58 on Oct. 14.

An outstanding performance was turned in by the relay team consisting of Mary Baumhart. Dawn Erickson, Karen Gafrick, and Maureen Moeller. They placed first in the 200-yard medley relay. First places were also turned in by Karen Gafrick in the 200-yard free style and Mary Baumhart in the 200-yard individual medley. Taking the top position in both the 50-yard free style and the 100-yard fly was Maureen Moeller.

The Maine West divers took all three top places in the diving competition. In first place was Mary Kay Gerhardt followed by Patty Ness and Jane Pabich for second and third places. Adding more points to
the final score was Donna Carstens with a first place in the 500-yard free style. Maine West terminated the meet with a first place in the 400-yard free relay with the help of Donna Carstens, Mary Kay Gerhardt, Sue Plosila, and Sue Sullivan.

Maine West was defeated the night before by a very tough team. Glenbrook North. Glenbrook North is ranked third in the state. The final score was 120-52. Dawn Erickson boosted the final score with a first place in both the 100-yard fly and the 100-yard backstroke. Also taking first place was Sue Sullivan in the 50-yard free style.

The swim team is now looking forward to participating in a league meet tomorrow at Maine South. followed by the district competition at Glenbrook South on Saturday. Oct. 30. If Maine West places first or makes the cut-off at districts, they will compete in the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 6. at Glenbrook South.
