Winter Sports Begin

What does winter mean? To some students and coaches here at Maine West it means the beginning of winter sports.

The boys' sports program offers basketball, swimming, gymnastics, and wrestling. For the girls there are fencing, volleyball, and gymnastics. The boys' sports will open on Nov. 8, as will girls' fencing since they will be facing male opponents. The girls' volleyball season starts Nov. 6, and following close behind is girls' gymnastics starting Nov. 18.

Each of these sports are alike in that the student will excel only as much as he or she wishes. However, much effort is put forth, that's how much the student will develop in that particular sport. Self
discipline is the key to such individualized sports as these.

The coaches for this year's teams will be girls fencing, Ms. Karen Kenyon, girls' fencing; Miss Royleen Tipton, girls' volleyball; and Ms. Judy Beck, girls' gymnastics. The coaches for the boys' teams will be Mr. Gaston Freeman, basketball; Mr. Scott Chovanec, swimming; Mr. Sid Drain, gymnastics; and Mr. William Barringer, wrestling.

In a recent interview Coach Barringer said, "The wrestlers will miss Mr. Carlini very much. He is the only varsity coach Maine West has ever had." Mr. Carlini coached them to state district championships the last two years.
