Music Students Perform

The District VII Music Festival was held on Nov. 13 at Oak Park ‑ River Forest High School. Thirty‑five high schools from the northeast district participated in this program.

Students from the participating high schools comprised the musicians at the festival. The students were selected by the directors at their schools and then auditioned to be a member of the district band, orchestra, or choir.

Maine West students who auditioned and were selected to be in the chorus were Bill Atherton '78, Annette Buck '77, Mark Gordon '77, Ed Hajost '77, Rick Kempiak '78, Warren Lowe '77, Kevin Marquette '78, Steve Pelinski '77, Luana Riccitti '77, Amy Robinson '77, Joanne Saverino '77, Traci Sheldon '77, Connie Urbas '77, and Stacey Walgreen '78.

Those who were chosen to be in the band were Carol Maney '78, David Geist '77, and David Fisher '78.

The students who played in the district orchestra were Mike Bock '79, Bill Hostettler '78, John Pascolini '77, Denise Pytlik '78, and Carol Stone '77.

The concert began at 3:30 p.m., and the cost of admission was $1. The audience heard a chorus consisting of 300 members and a band and orchestra made up of 150 instruments.

The directors of the band, chorus, and orchestra were guest directors. Julian Dawson from Illinois State University in Bloomington, Illinois, was the director of the orchestra. The chorus director was Margaret Hawkins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Weston Noble of Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, directed the band.

Mr. Donald Lord of the music department at Maine West felt, "The festival was a wonderful educational experience for the students involved."
