The Illinois State Scholarship Commission (ISSC) has announced this year's Illinois State Scholars. Out of the nearly 30,000 students who applied for this honor, approximately 12,000 were chosen.

The 1977-78 winners applied last year when they took the ACT test. They qualified on the basis of their ACT scores and high school achievements. Names of State Scholars are sent to various colleges throughout the country that seek out these students for admission. In addition, each State Scholar receives a Certificate of Merit in recognition of his achievement.

The 57 Maine West seniors who were recently named Illinois State Scholars are James Acker, Timothy Adams,

Brenda Baenke, Karen Baker, Donna Baron, John Bobrytzke. Dean Carpenter, Julie Carstens, Margaret Clem, Christine Cwiakala, Carrie Dierks, Stephen Dsida, Elizabeth English, Terhilda Garrido, Donald Gibson, Gayle Grzebieniak, and Nancy Habetler.

Others are Stephen Hoepfner. Kenneth Jaconetty, James Jaeschke, Barbara Klein. William Kopp, Mark Laman, Mary Beth Lamczyk, John Lee, Cynthia Lepczyk, Roy Lundquist, Christine Mac Crindle, Michael Maday. Donna Mielke, Bruce Murphy, Shawn Petramale. Mark Pierog, and Susan Ranft.
