The science and society class is a new semester course open to seniors this year. The course offers students information concerning various environmental problems.
The next 50 years will bring many problems such as population, water, air, chemical, and noise pollution, energy, land use, and values and technology. Some of the questions the class will be studying are the doubling of the earth's population by the year 2,000, the depletion of the natural gas reserves within 30 years, and the consumption of energy by the United States which will double by the year 2,000
This class, furthermore, is involved in community projects. Last month the students worked at the Des Plaines

Recycling Center on Oakton Street. Work-ing at the center consisted of helping citizens unload paper, cans, bottles, and motor oil from their cars. The workers then sorted the articles and put them into the respective bins.
The class is taught by Mr. Charles Powers, social science teacher, and Mr. David Howdle, science teacher. Mr. Howdle commented, "I think that every student should become aware of the environmental problems that surround him in his everyday life, and this course is a good way to find out."
The course resume states, "The basic objectives of the course are to create an awareness of the problems, examine alternatives, and have students adopt life styles that are compatible to maintaining a desirable quality of life in our society."
