Track Team Wins Opener

Winners of last year's indoor and outdoor conference meets, the Maine West Warrior varsity track team opened its season by crushing Glenbrook North 101 to 20 on Jan. 20.

The meet, held at the Maine South field house, had many bright spots for the Warriors. Maine West had first place finishers in 13 of 14 events.

Jeff Brydges took first in the two‑mile run beating Brian Tolan by three seconds. Brydges also won the 1,000‑yard run, with Gary Paul finishing second, and Tolan following in third.

Vince Webster won the shot put while Jim Enders followed in second place. In the high jump Pete Baksa took first and Tom Dinwiddie second. Chet Phillips won the pole vault as Tim Monahan trailed slightly and finished second.

Other good performances were turned in by Jim Winnecki who won the high hurdles, low hurdles, and finished second in the long jump. Tim Platek won the long jump as well as the 50‑yard dash. Platek also finished second in the 440‑yard dash which was won by Tony Krainik. Krainik also finished second in the 50‑yard dash.

In the 880‑yard run Don Murrey took first ahead of second place finisher, Terry Walters. Jim Kenyon finished second in the mile.

Finishing out the. good performances for the Warrior varsity was Jim Morava who won the triple jump. Maine West also won the mile relay.

The Warrior sophomores also won by a score of 61 to 47. Outstanding performances were turned in by Mike Unger who won both the high hurdles and the low hurdles. Bob Fischer also won both the mile run and the two‑mile run.

Kevin Martin won the long jump and finished second in the 440‑yard dash.

Other good performances were turned in by Simon Shum who won the 50‑yard dash and Tom Peters who won the high jump. Second place finishes were turned in by Jukka Kallio in the mile and two‑mile runs, Jim Mason in the pole vault, and John Cudahy in the 880‑yard run.

The freshmen lost 53 to 51. The next meet for the Warriors is Monday, Feb. 7, when Maine West hosts Schaumburg at the Maine South field house starting at 4:30 p.m.
