Three members of the varsity gymnastics team participated in the sectional competition held at Evanston High School on Feb. 24‑25. Nineteen schools competed.
Representing the Warriors, Mark Rocque placed in a tie for fifth with a score of 6.80 on the side horse; Todd Schludt scored a 7.10 on the trampoline; and Ray Redmond received a score of 7.45 at the rings.
The Warriors took sixth place in district competition held here Feb. 19 with a score of 85.87, their best team effort for the season. Elk Grove won the meet with a score of 136.09, and Maine East took second with 116.80.
Top scorers for Maine West were Mark Vogel with a 6.65 in the floor exercise and a 5.40 on the parallel bars; Mark Rocque on the side horse with a 6.15 took fifth place in that event; Todd Schludt who scored a 3.45 on the high bar and took fourth on the trampoline with a 7.05; and Ray Redmond with a 7.60 on the still rings.

On Feb. 5 Maine West went to Maine North to compete and also make up the meet canceled with Maine East due to weather Jan. 28. Maine East and Maine North both won with scores of 105.36 and 92.46, respectively. The Warriors scored 69.56. And on Feb. 4 the Warriors hosted Niles East who won with a score of 120.36 to Maine West's 71.04.
Warrior gymnasts closed out the season with a record of 1 and 13. When asked about this year's performance, Coach Sid Drain said, This year's team suffered from the lack of early years training, the sophomores and freshmen. They all worked hard and improved every meet."
The next meet to be held here at Maine West will be the National High School All‑Around Invitational on Apr. 23. Peter Kormann, Olympic medal winner in floor exercise, will compete with other top gymnasts from all over the United States.
