Swimmers Finish Third in District

The varsity swim team finished a solid third in the district meet held Feb. 19. This placing has matched the best in Maine West school history.

There were numerous outstanding performances turned in by the tankmen. Rob MacNab set two sophomore school records in the 100‑yard butterfly and in the 200 individual medley relay, earning him third and fifth place finishes. Steve Dunham took seventh in the diving competition, and Greg Lietzau took fifth in the 100‑yard backstroke.

One of the Meet's outstanding swimmers was Randy Roel. He set a new district record, a Glenbrook South pool record, and a Maine West school record by becoming the 1977 District 100‑yard Backstroke Champion with a time of :57.001. He also qualified for the state competition in the 50‑yard free style. He was the only Warrior to make it to state meet; others just missed the state qualifying times.

Second year head coach, Mr. Scott Chovanec, commented on Roel's achievements. "Roel went from a Mohawk to a shaved head to place 11th in the state final meet. He has been the second Warrior in Maine West school history to make it to a state final event in swimming. His time was two seconds from first."

In the Central Suburban League varsity conference meet the Warriors placed third behind Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South as they also placed ahead of the other Maine and Niles Township schools. Outstanding efforts were turned in by Dunham, who placed third in the diving competition, followed by Tom Stanonis in sixth place. The medley relay team of Roel, Craig MacNab, Duane Bohne, and Mike Baumhart took third place.
