The Social Science Department presented a special program to introduce students to politics. This year the program was held on Mar. 22 and 23.
The Social Science Forum extended to political candidates an invitation to present their views on Des Plaines government, now and in the future as well as a statement of their candidacy. It is a Maine West tradition to invite candidates for political office to discuss with the student body their views and to explain the importance of the upcoming election.

The Social Science Department, in particular, has been giving added attention to local government in the clinical summer intern program. Now with the number of 18‑year‑olds who are registered voters, the Social Science Department believes that the discussion of the issues is very important.
The Social Science Department encouraged the students to listen to the presentation, to read over whatever literature they received, to see themselves on TV videotape, and to actively participate in the campaign of those running for political office. The students who participated in the program were given partial optional credit in the government program at Maine West.
