Trackmen Take Second Place

The Maine West track men ended their indoor track season on Saturday, Mar. 19, with a second place finish in conference competition by a score of 102 to first place Maine East's 115. Jeff Brydges broke the indoor conference mile run record.

On Feb. 26, the track team ran in a dual meet against Hinsdale South. The varsity won by a score of 104‑28; the sophomores won by a score of 73‑41; and the freshmen won 65‑42. Jim Winiecki added to the score with four first places: in pole vault, long jump, low hurdles, and triple jump. Brydges had two first places, and Maine West took first place in the twomile, the 880, and the mile relay.

Then on Feb. 19 West ran in another dual meet against Loyola with the varsity and sophomore teams winning. The varsity had a score of 83‑40 and the sophomores 64 1/2 ‑ 43 1/2 Winiecki had two first places: Paul Lippold had two first places; and Brydges added with two first places in the two-mile and the mile run. All three relay teams came in first.

Mar. 1 brought on another win in the Hoffman Estates‑Prospect Meet with the varsity winning by a score of 101; Hoffman Estates, :34; and Prospect 31. Brydges broke the Maine South field house indoor track record in the mile run with a time of 4:23.8.

The track men traveled to Evanston on Mar. 4 to run in the Evanston Relays which consisted of 12 schools. Maine West's varsity came in fifth and the sophomore and freshmen took second. Winiecki placed in the pole vault and long jump; Tony Krainik placed in the 50‑yard dash; and Lippold placed in the 60‑yard high hurdles. The varsity two‑mile relay team, the four‑lap relay team, and the mile relay team all placed. The sophomore mile relay team and the freshmen four‑lap relay team both placed.

On Mar. 8 West brought home another win against Palatine with a varsity score of 89‑32; sophomores, 80‑42; and freshmen, 95‑31. Lippold, Krainik, and Brydges won two first places each to add to the win, and the three relay teams took first places. Winiecki fell while pole vaulting and broke his ankle; he is now in a cast and will be out for sometime.

On Apr. 12 West's outdoor team will run at Conant in the first meet in outdoor competition.
