Four Seniors Attend Illinois State
Four Maine West senior students were chosen by the American Legion post to represent their school at a government seminar. The seminar was held last June.

The students who represented Maine West were Karen Tanka, Lisa Wolf, Mike Clark, and Randy Smith. They, along with 300 other high school students from all over the state spent one week at different colleges studying all the aspects of our government.

Most of the time was used for learning all different political phases, including municipal, state, and national. The students also held mock elections which helped them learn more about the Illinois voting system.

Special guest speakers explained about subjects pertaining to political leadership.
On one of the days during their week stay, the representatives traveled to Springfield, Illinois, where they toured our states' Capitol. The entire trip was a great learning experience fore very one involved.

The American Legion post took careful deliberation on deciding exactly who would be chosen to represent Maine West. The representatives were chosen on their accounts of academic skill, social involvement, school spirit, and other outstanding achievements.

Lisa Wolf was very happy to have been chosen to attend Illinois Girls' State. She commented on her trip, "It was really fun meeting different people from all over the state. I also learned a lot about the government and political matters."

Lisa traveled by bus to Jacksonville, Illinois, where everyone who was attending girls' state met. This year's girls' state was held at MacMurray College.
