Leadership Seminar Teaches
Students Club Organization
Approximately six hours were spent helping and promoting Maine West clubs and organizations at a leadership seminar held Wednesday, Aug. 31, at school.

The main objective of the seminar was to acquaint club leaders with the school system and teach them more about leadership. They discussed publicity, organization, and various school rules and facilities. The students were also introduced to school personnel that might be helpful in their activities. Besides discussion, the President's Council played games that helped them get to know each other better.

The meeting started at 9 am. and lasted until 2:30 p.m. All club presidents, officers, and the new freshman Student Council members were invited. About 60 people, a large percentage of those invited, actually attended the meeting. Ellen Christ '78, Student Council president, said, "Those who missed it are really at a loss."

Student Council planned the seminar last spring. They had seen some leadership folders written by Dr. Earl Reum and ordered them. Also, senior Erica Rems, Student Council secretary, was sent to a leaders camp in Colorado where Dr. Reum was speaking. From this Maine West set up its own leadership meeting.

The leadership portfolios were handed out to the students at the seminar. The booklets explained how to be a leader, how to get more out of meetings, and how to involve people.
Many teachers were guest speakers at the meeting. Mr. James Coburn, principal, began by introducing Dr. Richard Short, superintendent of schools, who gave a speech on leadership. In it he defined a leader as one who acknowledges other groups, the faculty, adults, and understands the community and school rules. He said that a leader is also consistent, responsible, and honest.

Other speakers were Mr. Harvey Kelber, counselor, who set up a problem solving workshop. During their lunch break, the students solved problems he gave them. Mr. Eldon Burk, assistant principal, talked about communications such as the daily bulletin and P.A. system. He then introduced the secretaries, head cook, head custodian, and other office workers.

Mr. Daryl Schultz, teacher, talked on publicity and how to contact people in business for advertising. Miss Karen Kenyon, P.E. instructor, the Leader Club board, and Mr. Michael Carlye from the Seawang Candy Company presented a skit on fund‑raising, showing the wrongs and rights of conversing with salesmen. Also, Ellen Christ spoke about Homecoming.

Next year another seminar might take place that will try to include more. About the meeting Ellen said, "We're trying to get out and communicate and get people involved in school activities. Hopefully the clubs will work together and be able to achieve their goals better.
