Students Attend Institute
Maine West students Beth Kostick '79, Laura Geimer '79 and Marcie Marotto '79 were selected by the Social Science Department to attend the third annual teenage institute on substance abuse, July 19-23. The institute was held at the Allerton Park 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello, Illinois.

The purpose of the institute was to bring Illinois teenagers and expert resources to share information and examine feelings about alcohol and drug usage.

The primary goals were to increase community awareness, clarify accurate information, correct misinformation, and to encourage students to serve as effective resources in developing activities in their home communities.
During the day the girls attended lectures and small group sessions. Among the lecturers were lawyers, drug addicts, alcoholics, drug counselors, and many others. The small groups met regularly for in‑depth discussion of substance abuse from personal and social perspectives.

The girls found the camp a rewarding and profitable experience. Beth remarked, "I encourage everyone to try and get involved next year."
