Title IX Takes Effect
By 1978 most physical education classes will be coeducational, according to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This article will explain and examine Title IX with a follow‑up in the next issue on how Title IX will affect Maine West.

The program is aimed at terminating sex discrimination in high school P.E. classes. Under Title IX "No person shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." Naturally, some classes will never be sexually balanced; for example, how many guys will sign up for figure control?

Title IX assigns injury prevention as a major concern. Closer supervision will be necessary in classes having a greater risk of injury.
Many people wonder how girls can compete with boys in certain areas of skill. Standard norms will be ignored when possible and the standard skills objective may be the student's previous performance. This raises a question of whether the male egos of Maine West will be damaged when a female does excel. All men are not superior to all women in all athletic skills. There is a good deal of overlap in ability between the sexes, so that a sizable number of women outperform a number of men.

Ms. Karen Kenyon, Physical Education Department head, remarked, "The boys' and girls' physical education department began to jointly plan the curriculum early last spring. We are experimenting this year at all levels in certain activities and expect to be in full compliance with Title IX in September of 1978."
