Golf Team Faces Stiff Competition
Maine West's varsity golf team started its '77-'78 season Sept. 7 with a loss to Conant 179-163. A victory over Maine North, 172-168, and two defeats from Prospect and New Trier West gives the team a 1-3 record.
One reason for the varsity's slow start this season is the quality of the opposing teams, according to golf coach Mr. Eugene Zuccarini. "We are really going against some stiff competition," he stated. Another disadvantage facing the golfers is the lack of practice facilities available to them. Unlike the members of the Maine South, Prospect, New Trier West, Glenbrook North, and Glenbrook South teams, Maine West golfers are not country club members and have no local greens on which to practice. The team is currently practicing at the Golden Acres Country Club in Roselle, Illinois. "We could have a fair golf team if we continue to improve," concluded Mr. Zuccarini, "But we have a long way to go to be contenders."
Leading golfers on this year's team include Joe Doebbelaere and Mike Franklin, who has a nine hole average of 41. Other team members are Rick Battilini, Mike Bock, John Cizek, Steve Grueter, Ron Heyse, Bob Stevens, Gary Struck, Mike Wieglos, Mike Zilleox, and Steve Zilleox.
The sophomore golf team began its season on a higher note with 193-172 victory over Conant Sept. 7. Their record after four matches is 2-2.
Members of the sophomore team include John Gafrick, Jeff Georgoulis, Keith Halverson, Chuck Huzsek, Jeff Jones, Mike Kral, Ian Kunesch, Jim Linderman, Scott Martini, Brian May, Nor Suzuki, and Randy Trost.
